Ray, the Jet Streams are important and changing high speed tunnels of air located at the tropopause, a level at which the stratosphere below (where air temperature decreases with altitude) interfaces the troposphere above, (where air temperature progressively increases with altitude). Of course under natural conditions the jet streams alter position with the seasons, and so does the weather below. But they do not naturally have heavy massive if aerodynamic chunks of metal gaining speed and maintaining altitude at their expense, and in the process forcing them to expand downwards, slow down and (because they have to be entered from the side) widen. ‘Primum non nocere’ (first do no harm) is a medical dictum, and we are being irresponsible in assuming without strong evidence that interfering with them is harmless. At present the adage seems to be ‘Primum, non crescere cibus consummatio’ (first do not increase fuel consumption - (in Google latin!))

I am assuming that the weather satellites and other, local, measurements made provide the capacity to monitor and measure changes in position, direction, width, depth and temperature of jet streams, as well as weather changes below. So a start would be to have (control) jet-free days, where all planes are made to fly from West to East at a ceiling below the tropopause; and to compare them with ‘normal’ days. A variation would be to have say 2000 mile stretches that are jet free, alternating with 2000 mile stretches where planes hunt the jet streams as at present. The opposing hypotheses to be tested are ‘flying in the Jet Streams changes them’; and ‘flying in the Jet Streams does not change them’. Obviously, the conditions need to be randomised and analysis done by observers double blind. Once there is data on whether or not there is a significant effect, more sophisticated questions can be asked, specifically on whether, when and how flying in them as at present has a damaging effect on weather particularly at ground (and sea) level.
