The article posted by Kristin was written by Stuart Wolpert, a media guy from UCLA, as a PR piece to publicize J. William Schopf--a faculty member who probably was working on a lucrative grant. That type of PR is at least one level below the critical approach of a newspaper article--and intentionally sensationalistic. If he didn't write it that way, he'd probably be fired.
I didn't look at the scientific article, but it was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. I'm sure it was written up the way a scientific study should be written up.
