Northern lights, Aurora Borealis, Aurora Australis, innocuous enough names and of many stories, unfortunately it’s the stuff that makes these things bright in the night sky that can be deadly and disorienting for animals more sensitive to subtle changes in magnetospheric plasma surges and rapid depletions. There seems to be a correlation between events – certainly more data to be added to a greater interaction between planet and life forms.

I once followed the South Atlantic Anomaly phenomenon, as it’s called, back in the 80’s. Magnetic Pole shift scared a few folks then and there wasn’t enough data about it or what it meant for the scientific community. A lot has changed since and though it’s gotten bigger, according to later maps, the fear mongering about pole shift has dissipated quite a bit. Actually, quite irresponsible for some, the way they framed it then.

New instrumentation has improved greatly and some satellites are programmed to be temporarily inoperable while they pass over the South Atlantic.

There was a documentary produced for NOVA by WGBH Boston in 2002, called “Magnetic Storm.” Good DVD to start on about the magnetic field most folks simply adapt to without realizing its significance to other animals. It brought data from the 80’s and 90’s together. At any rate, there’s much more to this magnetic field. The following link incorporates several areas of research with this phenomenon.
