Global Village :  The Official GrahamHancock.com forums
For good-natured and mutually-respectful discussions of politics and current affairs. Soap-boxing and the promotion of extremist causes motivated by hate will not be tolerated by our moderators.

This post is intended to initiate an open discussion, in which I hope the moderators and everyone else with views on this subject will participate::

I write books about the mysteries of ancient history (and, coming up in a couple of years, the mystery of human origins) so why should my website host screeds of highly emotional outpourings about modern international politics?

It's a good question, and I find myself swinging one way and another on the answer to it.

On 26 October in a post on the Mysteries Board, I wrote:

"Since this is not a site about international politics but about dissenting history and the mysteries of our past and of the human condition, we intend eventually to put an end of the acrimonious and unpleasant political soap-boxing that presently fills up so many threads on GV. I had hoped that by facilitating political discussions on the GV some kind of gentle concensus and decency would emerge on how the immense human problems of the world we all live in could best be solved. But my impression, instead, is that GV has simply become a microcosm all the competing knee-jerk hatreds and prejudices that are holding humanity back. I see no benefit, or useful service to anyone, in that."

Now, about three weeks later (I've been in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Holland and Belgium), and after reading through some of the threads that have appeared on GV while I've been away, I find myself swinging in the opposite direction. True this site is not about international politics. But so what? Just because the main order of business for Ghdotcom is ancient mysteries does not have to mean ancient mysteries are the only thing we should discuss! Neither writers nor readers are one dimensional. We have other interests as well -- including, inevitably, modern politics. Moreover because the 21st century world has become so politicised, because we are indeed a "global village" with everyone now breathing down everyone else's neck (the thugs and the bullies alongside the philosophers and the saints), and because this is a place where large numbers of views are exchanged, I'm beginning to feel that it may be very easy, silly and repressive to try to ban political discussions here.

Its a cliche but I want free speech. I want it for myself, and I want it for everybody else as well. But there are also limits. When I say "free speech" I do not mean the freedom to spread lies about others or to incite hatred --either at an individual, national or international level.

And this seems to be the problem here. We exercise our right to free speech about international political issues and soon enough, either in the form of a repulsive link or of some directly repulsive statement, the hatred and lies begin to spread.

So the question becomes -- and it is a continual nightmare for the ever- patient and decent moderating team -- where to draw the line? Where to allow a post in the interests of the fundamental right of freedom of speech and where to delete it because it so obviously spreads hatred and lies?

Making such calculations on a daily basis is extremely difficult, delicate and time-consuming work. It is also discouraging work when the "knee-jerk hatreds and prejudices" just keep on coming, no matter what we do or say to try to minimise the problem.

But on the other hand the somewhat "Wild West" atmosphere of the Global Village is one in which any strongly expressed view is soon likely to encounter an equally strongly expressed opposing view. Maybe it is much more important to allow such an open forum for the democratically-expressed views of free people to continue, than to shut it down simply because it is difficult, painful, time-consuming and not directly connected to the main themes of my work today?

Before we make the decision to shut Global Village down, therefore, I'd like to have a detailed discussion about the matter. The Board belongs to everyone who posts here, so everyone who's interested should have their say on this question of its future.

All the best, Graham
