Are you forgetting that shortly prior to Frances help in the American revolution they tried to counqur the Americas for themselves. The colonists were wise enough to side with the British which was much less brutal and explotive at the time. Lesser of two evils I guess. Shortly thereafter the French decide to help America acheieve its independence....WHY? Because they were exploting the colonists cause of freedom to get back at their hated enemy of the time the British Empire. History is never about leaders "standing up for what they believe in". This applies to your posts Ananda in which you state that Chirac is protesting the war on Iraq because he believe war is immoral. No, he is probably just using that as a front and doing it because it benefits him politically. Yes yes the same may even apply to President Bush but at least the result will be a safer world even if id does increase his wealth and power at the same time
