Maybe that's because they aren't as sovereign as they believe, at least not in the minds of those in the USG and the right wing pundits. Using emotions as a means for manipulating American public opinion has been used quite effectively by the Bush admin. I guess it has served as a wonderful distraction from the many faults of Bush and his administration. Some people think that he's the best thing since sliced bread, when he really hasn't done much of anything constructive. And his speeches/press conferences are so zombie-like and obviously carefully scripted, it's a wonder why more people haven't laughed him out of Washington.
