"Or is he a character from some comic book dreamt up by hawks in the Pentagon? One asks this question because of what Garner told American reporters on Wednesday. “We ought to be beating our chests every day,” he said. “We ought to look in a mirror and get proud and stick out our chests and suck in our bellies and say: ‘Damn, we’re Americans’.”

This is talk straight out of the GI Joe comics that were so popular with US forces in World War II. Given that close to sixty years have passed since then, one would have thought that American military officers would have grown up by now and not continued to sound like Joe Palooka. Evidently not, however, judging from Garner’s remarks.

“Stick out our chests”? “Suck in our bellies”? Ye gods! What other “pearls of wisdom” — mindless idiocy would be more like it — are we going to get to hear from him next?

Warming to his theme, Garner added: “There are some demonstrations. That’s a first step towards democracy. You’re allowed to demonstrate.” “So there’s a glass-half-full situation and you ought to go out and demonstrate that,” Garner said in a remark worthy of George W. Bush and his convoluted syntax. “Demonstrate a glass-half-full situation” — yes, old Dubya himself might have said that.

More importantly, however, if the Iraqi people are now allowed to demonstrate, as Garner claimed, how does he explain the fact that US troops killed at least 13 Iraqi civilians and wounded 75 others when they fired at a group of 200 demonstrators on Monday evening in the town of Fallujah, 30 miles west of Baghdad?

People in Iraq are now “free” to demonstrate. And US troops are equally free to shoot them, even if the demonstrators are unarmed and include children
