David Bowman and Sagittarius

July 10, 2002 04:55PM
Hi Teddy,

A small peice on "The Matrix" is in the pipeline - another very interesting film!

There's a little more I'd like to add to "2001"...

David Bowman and Sagittarius

Kubrick uses esoteric allegories through out the film. The obvious analogies are the celestial alignments that proceed each of the alchemical transmutations in the film. The second main allegory is that it is a stone that initiates these transmutations. But there are others hints that are just as curious.

Bowman (David Bowman, the main character of "2001") is also a name for the constellation Sagittarius. Which is a man with a bow. This on it's own may appear to be uninteresting but this concerns the position of the center of the galaxy. This point in the sky is found right next to the constellation of Sagittarius. In fact, the Bow-Man of Sagittarius is shooting his arrow right into the heart of the Milky Way galaxy. Bowman represents Sagittarius' arrow as it passes through the center of the galaxy. This is also echoed later in the "beyond the infinite" sequence where Bowman witnesses an exploding galaxy.

"At the very edge of Sagittarius, at the border to Ophiuchus and Scorpius lies the center of our galaxy. It lies about 30000 lightyears distant." - University of Arizona Lunar Planetary Laboratory

Sagittarius as potrayed in ICG Comics!

"Sagittarius originally served as the galaxys' greatest bounty hunter. He was often hired by the GLEA itself to track down and "eliminate" intergalactic criminals they were unable to apprehend. Eventually, he found himself travelling to the Earth in pursuit of the hired assassin known as the Fish. The trail led him to Zodiac Mountain, where he encountered Orion and Andromeda. Orion was forming a new Zodiac, and astonishingly, Sagittarius agreed to join. He gave up the life of a bounty hunter to instead serve the cause of justice at the side of new friends and allies. Recently, he and Andromeda formed a new Zodiac with the children of the old members. Sagittarius' tracking skills are augmented by his deadly proficiency with the bow."
