Ireland has changed a lot in the last few years, and is about to change even more, I feel. Still, there is a tradition of association of names with regions of the country, as they correspond to where the original clans came from.
The O'Donohues (of which there are various spellings, ultimately meaning "son of Donacha" - again various spellings - a name that means "great warrior" or somethng like that) have a major clan not far from where I live. I live in Cork, and just North of Cork is Kerry, and that is where they come from. The msot famous O'Donohues were local cieftains (Kings, as Kerry likes to call itself "the Kingdom").
