'Zounds, sir, you're robb'd; for shame, put on
Your heart is burst, you have lost half your soul;
Even now, now, very now, an old black ram
Is topping your white ewe. Arise, arise;
Awake the snorting citizens with the bell,
Or else the devil will make a grandsire of you:
Arise, I say.
As you know, America has an extremely ugly history of racism. One of the classic tropes is "they're coming to rape your wives and daughters!" Trump said Mexico is "not sending their best...They're rapists".
'Zounds, sir, you are one of those that will not
serve God, if the devil bid you. Because we come to
do you service and you think we are ruffians, you'll
have your daughter covered with a Barbary horse;
you'll have your nephews neigh to you; you'll have
coursers for cousins and gennets for germans.
Context is everything, and with those Iagos mentioned above the theme is always "our culture is being erased. And Trump loves to compare humans to animals: "We have a lot of people coming into our country, or trying to come in...These aren’t people. These are animals."
I am one, sir, that comes to tell you your daughter
and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs.
I studied Othello during the Obama administration and was floored by the universality. I was watching the little proto-Trumpers bloom. I know someone who said, "I don't know anything about him but I know he should be assasinated!" That person is a text book biker, wore leather every day, and they knew nothing about Barack Obama but his name and what he looked like. And they "knew".
I thought Othello was prescient then. I never in my wildest dreams imagined Americans would get worse. But I also didn't anticipate a member of the very exclusive Oval Office club encouraging them.
Can you imagine how proto-Trumpers would have reacted had Barack Obama called Vladimir Putin a cave man?
