I also have to wonder if Wexner really knew what was going on. He may just been a good decoy client for the early stages of Epstein's operation. It looks to me like the intelligence community is on the lookout for people like Jeffrey Epstein, or Daniel Ivandjiiski, the founder of Zero Hedge. Both of these guys were ambitious securities traders who got booted from high profile firms for borderline misbehavior. Not bad enough for prosecution, but bad enough to get canned. Now what sort of career could either of them expect to have after that? Other similar firms would not want to hire them. Too risky. Some sort of complete change would be required, you would think. And probably to something that doesn't pay nearly as well. So, at this point the spook recruiters talk to them... "Do you want to stay in the financial field? Looks like the only way you can do that is to work for us!" And they get setup with fronts of one sort or another, and given funding. Epstein created his own trading firm very quickly after getting fired.
People don't think much about it, despite the steady drum beat of publicity about data leaks. Finance is the way to watch everything and everyone now. You can't do anything without getting checked in some financial database ("credit check") and of course all your purchases are tracked by advertisers. Financial data is the ultimate spy resource now. Only after that comes the further advantages of "high" finance, being able to arrange large business deals, learning all the details of how each business works along the way, or outright bribing people. Not to mention providing cover for the more dangerous spooks.
It will be interesting to see why Epstein finally got caught. Was it really just that a reporter refused to let go of the story? I don't think the big spook agencies are that inept. Maybe he was not supposed to be victimizing US citizens, or at least limiting how many of them he pulled in. US Intelligence does have a very different attitude to non-citizens. Ever heard of the book The Blindfold's Eyes? A US citizen who happened to be Hispanic (i.e. brown) was in Guatemala and got kidnapped by the torture goons sponsored by the US. She was in their torture facility for something like a week before a US "handler" showed up and told them to release her. But, as for the other non-US citizens, just carry on!
But then again it is possible he was involved in a completely foreign operation, an "ally" that the US was sort-of willing to tolerate because they got some of the blackmailed info, and the cost just got too high over time.
