In reviews or discussion, there are established procedures for interactions--and levels of analysis. A reviewer is responsible for articulating multiple POVs, with supporting materials consistent with the focus and level of detail of the discussion.
It's an art, and it takes time for all of us to achieve mastery, but it relies on implicit standards of quality and honesty for any discussion to work.
It's very hard to apply that communication model outside of the academic environment.
