I’m not really thinking of the Dem primaries, but rather the kind of candidate they will have to run in 2020 to beat Trump. Let’s face it – 1/3rd of the electorate, Trump’s base, will vote for him for sure unless something cataclysmic happens. Dems will need someone who is everything that Trump is not, to have a realistic chance of carrying the majority of the remaining 2/3rd.
Which is why I’m not thrilled with the folks signed up so far. I think anyone too far left, the progressive bunch, will alienate the middle and turn off the moderates, with zero chance of attracting moderate republicans. You need somebody who’s a left leaning moderate to carry most of this spectrum.
Tulsi Gabbard – Almost a fruitcake, and I doubt America is ready for a Hindu president;
Kamala Harris – Probably a warm and engaging person, but her prosecutorial tone when talking of serious stuff is rather dismaying;
Elizabeth Harris – Cold, unlikable, shrill, far left, cannot relate to most folks. Definitely has a likeability problem, along with the ridiculous DNA test that did more damage than good;
Biden – Qualified, but unexciting to the point of being boring;
Bloomberg – Same as Biden. I doubt if his pet issues of gun control and the environment will be inspiring enough to get him elected. This election will be about kitchen-table issues.
Which brings us to Beto. He’s left of center, articulate, thoughtful, intellectual and inspiring.
