See this video for an overview of the development history of drones, the current military threat, and how the US is working to counter the threat: Black Dart is the US' Answer to Drones: War Games. Video is 11 minutes. The part I find most interesting is the use of 3D printing for drone development.

The scariest part though as far as use against civilians is the concept of the "drone swarm". A short video on that here: US Military Released Micro Drone Swarm From FA 18 Super Hornet Jet. 2 minute video, 3 parts: release of drones, video of drone maneuvers on video screen, and then a video of the swarm from the ground. They make a rather eerie sound as they swarm.

Finally, here is where DARPA is taking the offensive use of swarms and cooperative behavior of military aerial robotic vehicles: DARPA's System of Systems (SoS) Integration Technology and Experimentation (SoSITE) program. Shows a coordinated attack by a set of 3 UAVs, a fighter plane, and a "mission truck" - basically a flying "aircraft carrier" loaded with UAVs and cruise missiles. (This video is almost 4 years old - this stuff is already deployed.)

Personal note: I find this sort of stuff a lot more interesting than the junior high level of politics that the MSM focuses on 24/7.
