Hi Susan,

You are correct, evidence cannot be inserted into the ice, but that doesn't mean to say that evidence cannot be misinterpreted, or indeed, presumed. The prime example of this is in the original assertion that the ice core workers had found the AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius in their ice cores, as well as assuming they had found the historical eruption of Hekla in AD 1104, which they then marked as so called "zero error dates" in their ice. The fact is that they did not have Vesuvius, or Hekla as the ice cores were misdated.

When it comes to Thera, they believed that they had evidence for it in ice they dated to 1641 BC, but which as we now know should be dated to 1627 BC and was caused by Aniakchak in Alaska. The irony is of course that in 1989 the ice core workers were telling volcanologists that volcanologists had to find evidence for a much larger sulphur output of Thera than the volcanologists had reported to match the signal in the ice core workers' 1641 'BC' ice layer (which was actually dated to 1645 BC at that time). To labour that point, without any evidence that positively linked the 1641 BC ice layer acid to Thera (one needs chemical analysis of tephra shards for a positive identification as one cannot identify a volcano from an acid signal) the ice core workers were dictating that the volcanologists should reassess their science to match the ice core worker's unfounded presumption. That is, in my opinion, rather naughty.
