Yve writes “My blood ran cold when I read the last piece. I've been reading about all these things since the 70s, mostly in very old books. Easy to find in London with all the alternative bookshops, especially near the British Museum, I am fascinated by the Hittites and Assyrians and love all the museum artifacts. The reason I stopped going back before ancient Babylon was it seemed to lurch into a completely different world, more related to aliens and long lived giants and so on.There was one particularly gruesome story I found. I think based in Sumeria. There was a large ziggurat which had a 'god' living in it at the top. Nobody except his attendants was allowed to see him as to do so would kill you. Brighter and more powerful than the sun.Once a year he would take a bride to live in utter luxury but they knew, and accepted that she would never be released again. After she was chosen, along with attendants, she would have a farewell feast. However, once inside she would be flayed alive, slowly over days , and later the other women would suffer the same agony.Parts of her flesh would be eaten. Whether this was some cannibal cult, demented flesh eater or ritual it didn't say.It only occurred to me today that maybe people DID live in ziggurats and pyramids.
I don't know the Merchant of Venice in great depth but I always start with the character names.Portia has one meaning of a doorway, another a pig ?! and ShyLOCK . I looked it up and it says White Hair.Certainly makes you think about that pound of flesh.”

I have found nothing particularly blood-curdling or chilling in my translations up to this point. On the contrary, there appears to be a mix of fundamental teachings that predate Buddhism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism…and original stories that later became those we find in the biblical texts. I know of the story you mention here, but not its source.

“Parts of her flesh would be eaten” sounds to me like a description of the waning moon which was, indeed, feminine and spouse of the sun in ca.2600 BC. It could be that this was a method of counting time until the repayment of a loan, that a story sprang up from that, and that the Shakepearian play was loosely based on it. Another meaning of SU is ‘to sink’, a fitting term for celestial movements. All related to astronomy. No domineering gods or blood-thirsty rulers required, rather a group of people with great knowledge whose lessons became confused mythologies and whose insights were usurped by later generations. And why not? All the later languages have their roots in the earliest Sumerian tongue. If you are the only one to still possess a tablet, or a manuscript copied from a tablet and to work out some precious information inscribed there, why not take it for your own and ‘make your name on high’? In the footsteps of giants.

I suspect that Plato’s character, Meno, is a deliberate play on the Sumerian symbols ME-NU, with the possibility of humorous but also profound meanings typical of Sumerian. It might read: ‘without spirit’, ‘not a magician’, ‘soulless’ or, on the contrary ‘the magician’s knot’. Was it Gordian?
