Could it be that the torture victim here was not Jesus but the Knights Templar Grand Master Jacques de Molay, who had confessed to a variety of 'crimes' under extreme torture (part of which included a mock crucifixion)?

Timings say it is possible:
Shroud dated in 1988 to be created 1260-1390
de Molay lived 1243-1314
