English translation"
'Scots, who have with Wallace bled,
Scots, whom Bruce has often led,
Welcome to your gory bed
Or to victory.
Robert Burns 1793

Setting: Stirling, Scotland 23 June 1314

Scottish forces led by Robert (King Robert I) the Bruce ammassed on a field to face the soldiers of the English King Edward II. A well motivated Scottish army of 9,000 faced a seasoned battle-hardened professional army of 38,000 and yet at a pivotal moment in the fighting the English soldiers turned and ran for their lives. Legend has it that the English saw, behind the Scottish soldiers, the standards of the Templars being led by Sir William Sinclair (St. Clair) and knowing what this entailed, the English soldiers retreated in fear, handing a victory to the Scots.

Is it possible that a remnant of the Templars had taken refuge in Scotland and then come to the aid of the Scots during this decisive battle? Or was the defection of English nobleman, Sir Alexander Seton, to Bruce's side and with him invaluable information about English tactics, manouvers, defenses and strategies which gave the Scots the day?

In this fascinating BBC account of that day there is no mention of Sinclair or Templars
