Interesting question Xavier! To me the answer revolves around whether the Japanese Admiral had knowledge of the relieving fleet sailing his way and whether his orders would have allowed him to break off the attack on Wake and attack that fleet. The Japanese had 2 aircraft carriers and I believe their aircraft were probably a bit better that the planes on the Saratoga.

Now if the Japanese were not aware of the relieving fleet, and it could get behind the attackers, it could have done a lot of damage had Wake defenders kept the Japanese pre-occupied.

At that early stage of the war, my guess is that the protection of those ships was more important than holding Wake Island. What if, for exmple, the Japanese broke off the attack on Wake, surrounded the relieving fleet, and destroyed it?

Not a happy thought!
