I just checked Paul's post at Ma'at and it seems that I may have been wrong. His expertise on the subject becomes apparent right off the bat. The documentation he is able to provide for the rings is amazing. He was also able to document the mechanism that accounts for the separation.
From what I had learned, I was under the impression that spheroidal weathering worked one layer at a time, not by forming many rings at once. From what Paul says this may be due to the effects from the Liesgang rings. I have not seen this in other formations, so that is why I doubted it as the cause. I'm big enough to admit when I am wrong so it seems that I should have given more weight to the argument for spheroidal weathering. Oh well, to err is human, and necessary for learning. LOL.
