I think the answer is simple: The "establishment" is afraid of being wrong.
People (whether they like to admit it or not) are incredibly proud and stubborn. To be proven wrong (especially amonst other "intellectual snobs") would be the ultimate slap in the face. It's amazing to me that these scientific adults still act as children with their little cliques of whose "in" and whose "out".
