It occurs to me that this piece of iron could have been lodged inside the southern shaft, but was pushed between two stones (stones were rough surfaced and edged and not cemented in place) by the force of the gunpowder explosion that removed two tiers of core stones.
Unfortunately, this would mean that we have no way of telling when the object fell into the shaft.
So few answers - and not one of them mine.
