For example, if you look closely about 2/3 of the way down on this photo:
You can see trowel marks that appear to have been applied horizontally with small peaks to the right of each trowel sweep. And we see red paint on virtually every one of those plaster peaks to the right of each trowel swipe.
This can also be discerned in the lower left corner of the photo.
Even in the Khufu cartouche, all the stray dots seem to be riding on peaks and none in the nadir of the trowel swipes (or in this case, perhaps chisel marks).
Compare it to the end wall glyphs where there are virtually no stray red marks...or plaster...at all:
