You make valid points here. The simple logic here is that if lines were required in the disc then Vyse would have made a bigger disc to accomodate them, just like he (eventually) did with his drawing at the bottom-left of the page. Over and above which, elsewhere in his journal, Vyse draws other cartouches from the chambers below of comparable size to this and he has no trouble placing markings within. So why not the disc of the Khufu cartouche--twice?
Vyse tells us in his own words in his published book that he "minutely examined" Campbell's Chamber for quarry marks. And yet he spots the two small dots (a mistake actually) under the snake glyph, but entirely misses the much larger lines in the disc. By the time Vyse enters Campbell's Chamber he already knows there are six other discs in cartouches in the chambers below he opened previously that ALL have markings within the centre of the disc. As such it is only logical and reasonable to take the view that during his minute examination of Campbell's Chamber, Vyse woud have been entirely ANTICIPATING that marks would ALSO be found in the disc of the Khufu cartouche.
But no. On two occasions in his diary Vyse draws the Khufu cartocuhe from Campbell's Chamber, BOTH times WITHOUT the hatched lines. Why? Because when he originally placed the cartouche into Campbell's Chamber, he copied a cartouche that had no lines. Only after his visit to the Tomb of the Trades did Vyse finally realise and decide that the blank disc in the chamber (and in his journal) required lines. Vyse saw at the Tomb of the Trades two (plural) Khufu cartouches with hatches (images below).
Hence his comment in his diary:
"Cartouches [plural] in tomb to the W.[west] of the first pyramid are different than Suphis."
Since the Suphis/Khufu cartouche in the chamber today has hatched lines and since Vyse observed the cartouches in Tomb of the Trades with hatched lines then surely he should have said the cartouches were the SAME, not that they were "different". This tells us, logically, that the cartouche in Campbell's Chamber at this time--just as he has in his journal twice--had a disc WITHOUT the hatched lines, hence why Suphis is "different".
