Reading more from the original quote above it looks like Mr. West is confusing the known geological link with Member II limestone of the Sphinx Temple with that of the Valley temple. In the Valley temple the bedding is more homogeneous and it is difficult to match it to the bedding on the Sphinx, other then the basic observation the head is made mostly out of a similar massive limestone (interbedded with thin marly layers, there are a few blocks that look like they are eroded like the neck which is a weak limestone with thin cyclothemic interbedding (as opposed to Member II which is considerably thicker in it's cyclothemic beds)). If they came from the enclosure they came mostly from around the face part of the head or above which is at a higher elevation than the blocks in the Valley temple.... the 4th dynasty Egyptians didn't need to lift them very high since it's downhill.
