the modern Egyptians are 90% Moslem. So I don't think they regard ancient Egypt as their cultural heritage all that strongly as much as they do a cash cow. Compare Stonehenge with Giza for instance. Stonehenge is strongly connected to Modern Brits and as a result Stonehenge is free to visit. the population simply wouldn't stand for being charged to see something which they believe is already theirs
