As I understand it mutations have positive side effects in that survivors have adapted to the circumstances. I've also read somewhere about mini mutations that are hardly noticed that are positive. As Andrew Collins points out, Carl Sagan was the first to write about it in the seventies, this theory of cosmic rays affecting life here on earth can thus possibly be related to changes in DNA.
