There is a huge difference between a sea-faring boat and an ocean-faring one. The trip to Punt was a coast hugging trip as all that was required was sailing down the Red Sea to the horn of Africa and then going inland on foot from there. Based on the Egyptian's description of the trip there, and the types of goods and animals that came from Punt archaeologists are fairly sure on its location.

Egyptian ships had no keel ... the were basically held together by ropes linking the front to the back and pulled tight. They were not sturdy enough for ocean travel. Even in 600 BC the Pharaoh Necho hired the Phoenicians to circumnavigate Africa.

I would suggest The Ancient Mariners by Lionel Casson for a scientific analysis of the capabilities of the AE ship.

I correspond through email with a number of Andeanists... I'll ask them about the date palm seed.
