I am interested in the appearance of gammadions and swastikas in Mesoamerican decorative art.

One of these symbols, the so-called "Solomon's knot" or duplex knot, appears in both the Old World and the New World. It appears frequently on round shells placed in several of the snake mounds in the US, while in the Old World it makes its first appearance in pre-Pythagorean Crete, and is taken up by the Pythagoreans. It is also taken up by the Coptic Pythagorean brotherhood, and passed from them to Moslem decorative artists. It is from the Moslems that we get the designation "Solomon's knot". These Copts also designed the mosaics found in the temples and bath-houses of Roman-occupied Europe and England.

There must have been contact between the Old and New Worlds as some stage before Columbus, but it is difficult to know at what period this transmission of sacred symbols occurred.

The duplex knot, gammadion and swastika are similar in that they all have four arms, and on both sides of the Atlantic these symbols are considered sacred, and associated with the four directions, the four winds, the four archangels, etc.

One of the reasons the Maya were so easily converted to Christianity was because the colours associated with the four horsemen in the Book of Revelation (red, white, black, yellow) exactly matched the colours they associated with the four rain-gods.
