There is also the aspect of the garden of eden story in that woman, in this case Eve opened up a metephorical door to let all the evil (that is really raw knowledge lacking restraint of wisdom) into the world. It was only after this that evil, or more to the point "sin", which was personified as an actual, literal figure (croutching at your door) came into the picture.

I view the box not so much as a shape, ie; box, jar, ark, cave (all of which have been used in world myth to fill the same roll) but as a conept of the emptiness within. A closed space whose sole function is to be empty or to put it another way, a void where all is potential and when opened in small increments with gathered wisdom leads to healing. But when opened fully in a rush to get the prize without running the race lets out all the dark portions of our inner selves.

Also in the story there is a male counterpart to Adam in Epimetheus, who is just as hapless as Adam. And a tree where Pandora was first given the "box" by a strange temptor.

Pandora by the way means "All" and she was very much all things that man was not...
