Dr Sunil

Let me pick you up on your first point first since it is easiest to kick into the long grass. You say:

Also the conquest of the New World and that of Australia show that it is possible to completely change the ethnic and linguistic make-up of a place within a couple of hundred years. There are plenty of other examples in recorded history.

When people start listing examples that are not germane to the problem in hand and then complete the list with a phrase like "there are plenty of other examples..." then I know they're in trouble.

How do I know that? Easy. They would have listed the germane examples in the first place. So, here's a formal challenge for you, doc.

You tell me of a single example of a "complete change [of] the ethnic and linguistic make-up of a place within a couple of hundred years" that is not carried out in the special circumstances of the discovery of a new world.

And don't say Hungary by the Magyars. I hate that one.

When you've done that, I'll deal with the rest of your question with equal bravura (or equal humility depending on how you rise to the challenge).

Mick
