Does anyone here know anything about the development of French and Italian? ALthough it is certainly true, say, that none of the languages of the invaders of France were taken over by the population of what is now France, French has definite Germanic influences, and the 'invaders' never took over the entire area the way the Anglo-Saxons did. Aren't those points relevant?
And my question about the Romans hasn't been answered. Since the Romans had a tremendous influence on the languages in many countries, surely they are relevant?
Ditto the Celts. European Celts came into Britain in very small numbers it appears, and yet the languages of the British Isles were Celtic.
