Knowledge exists outside of science. There are a few different types of knowledge and an infinite number of ways to gain knowledge. A mouse can learn to avoid a mousetrap but that doesn't mean it is "scientific" or that it has performed experiment to gain that knowledge.

Free men with time to invent and build can develop new things with no science at all. Rome prospered because it had so many free and well fed individuals as well as a great deal of knowledge gained over the previous 2000 years. But it still lacked any science of any type. They instead had knowledge, trial and error, and the wealth and freedom to follow ideas.

I would maintain that it would be impossible to invent agriculture outside of a theoretical underpinning; science. It follows that while the Romans are known to have lacked science that the inventors of agriculture in the 9th century BC mustta had science of some sort. I believe there are the metaphysical words for science in the Coffin Texts and scattered throughout ancient writing but Egyptologists mistake it for religion and magic. Just as Egyptologists can't see all those words that don't exist in the writing they misunderstand the ones that do exist.

Man fears the pyramid, time fears man.
