Hi Mercurial,

The 1,000 loaves of bread is in a section that i have labelled as speculative. I don’t really know why it works and the number 1,000 could mean something else. However, in the later Demotic script, two stars was the sign for degrees according to Mathieu Ossendrijver and Andreas Winkler in their paper “ Chaldeans on the Nile: Two Egyptian Astronomical Procedure Texts with Babylonian Systems A1 and A2 for Mercury”. In the first three stories, the offerings that Khufu declares for the deceased Pharoah’s is as follows:

I have a hunch that the two incense balls may represent a pair of stars. The number 1,000 doesn’t make sense and Ossendrijver and Winkler indicate that the source of ** is likely the sumerian word for 60 due to its phonetic similarity. 1,000 divided by 60 equals 16.66...; 16 hours 40 minutes. It could also be 16 degrees 40 minutes. I just don’t know without further investigation. Belmonte (2001) indicates that the observations made by the Egyptian astronomers would be accurate to +/- 20 minutes R.A. However, their is no evidence of their expression of R.A. In the form that we do in modern astronomy that I am aware of.

No problems Melissa and thank you for the other suggestions. I would also really recommend taking a look at Lynne Kelly’s work regarding mythology as a tool in the kit bag of pre-literate societies:
