One thing that I have been thinking about recently is the management of the building of the pyramids of Egypt. I’ve recently had experience with the management of large offshore contact centres with approximately 2,000 staff. This has given me an insight into the management of large workforces “at a distance” as well as some of the difficulties that arise from not having proximity to the work that is being done. In today’s world, to mitigate this risk, we have the ability to meet virtually with phone and video conferences to drive an agenda or plan forward. In the time of the building of the Great Pyramid circa 2,500 BCE, the leadership team could not have access to the designer and executive (Pharoah) unless they travelled to site to meet. As such, there must have been a high degree of planning, communication and delegation. I’m sure I am not the first to think about this, so I am looking for recommendations for papers or books to read on what we know of the organisational structure and management of the building of the pyramids.
