The most parsimonious answer about the bags is simply that the knowledge was being passed down by travellers. Travellers always have bags that they bring with them. They brought the knowledge of agriculture, knoweldge of writings, etc etc etc, and as such it doesnt even have to be that figurative or mysterious. THey literally were travellers brigning wisdom to a less developed culture.
