Broker writes “I’m not sure if this will help you with your search but here is some of the Symbolism related to Boats & Ships.”

Hello Broker,
The Sumerian ship had pagans and a beer cask at its heart. With that in mind, anything could happen… But magic and talons play an important part in my next book where I analyse the symbols individually.

The stories were no doubt violently distorted in multiple directions at some unknown point(s) in time; probably all based on writings from pagan sources (I favour the Sabians of Harran as the original authors) that included alchemy, astrology, etc. and impossible to disentangle without going back beyond them all to a text such as The Story of Sukurru – which can only give a partial glimpse of the process. There is an obvious lacuna between them – the humour.

I haven’t read Bachelard. The main thing that strikes me is that the discussion is based on those mythologies for which we don’t have a source. Without knowing what was in the minds of the originators, I wonder how it is possible to read deeply into them. The ‘awareness of sin’ element makes me suspect that Charon and Hell were creations/distortions imagined by a manipulative power structure at some time in history, posterior to The Story of Sukurru (where the idea of hell was getting whacked over the head with the wife’s spindle after drinking too much beer). And ‘the immutable misfortune of mankind’ has an unpleasant ring of inevitability to it. That is not to say that the Sumerian language was superficial in any way - quite the contrary. But the written word became a weapon at some point. A different kind of magic.

To give an idea of the complexity and difficulty in maintaining clarity, the cosmic ship in The Story of Sukurru is sometimes termed a ‘basket’ which is the ‘coracle’ of the hero, reminiscent of the cradle in which Moses is discovered. It’s also the ‘basket’ from which two children are taken, their cradle – ‘by the wind seized and spirited away’ – in a scene that is reminiscent of the voyage of Jason, while Odysseus, tied to the mast of his ship, has his origin in Pan in the same position. The children are taken by the bird ZU, whose name, symbol of a pyramid, means ‘knowledge’. The nest, another cradle, to which they are taken and from which a child will later be ejected (this is a comedy) can be understood as the matriarchal womb, the Milky Way, and invokes astrological connections. All of the old stories are important in that they constitute pieces of an immensely ancient and intricate puzzle. As individual pieces, they are only worth the knowledge that they bring of the times and the mindset of those who interpreted them.

Thank you for this informative précis. Each Sumerian symbol tends to drag me off into some realm about which I don’t have specialist knowledge: from Egyptian lore, to Greek myths, biblical stories, philosophy, alchemy, the very core of Hermetic knowledge, the ancient understanding of magic. Places that I don’t have the capacity to reach involving geometry, astronomy….which was why I started this thread to find out more about the three ships at Giza. I am aware of the importance of the ship through the re-translating of The Instructions of Shuruppak and now through looking more closely at certain symbols. But at this stage, it would be too time-consuming to dig deeply into this subject which is why I am very appreciative of your post.

Madeleine

The Story of Sukurru (2600 BC) line 44: “for his task as spirit” Pan tied to the mast to prevent him from playing the windpipes, copied later by the same scene with Odysseus tied to the mast to stop him succumbing to the Sirens.

The Story of Sukurru line 127: “Puffing towards the midday sun, its heart of stone to know, out of the opening they rise.”
Line 131: “Then…the day….the sun rising before the noble frame, the sweetly swaying vessel its rope seizes.”

The Story of Sukurru lines 71 and 72: “Dog-Head, close to his long foot new life from rising again his noble arm will guard.
Exalted Sun, the long-footed new-born of Zu from between his noble arms will free.” (Sirius and the Sun)
