Hi Madeleine,

I’m not sure if this will help you with your search but here is some of the Symbolism related to Boats & Ships.

The boat is the symbol of Voyaging, or of a crossing made either by
the living or by the dead.

All civilizations have their boat of the dead. The belief that the
dead accompany the Sun in ‘boats of the sun’ is widespread throughout
Oceania (Frobenius, quoted in Mircea Eliade’s, Patterns in Comparative
Religion p. 137).

In Ancient Egyptian art and literature the dead were described as
sailing through the twelve regions of the Underworld in a sacred boat.
It sails through dangers by the thousand, serpents, demons and evil
spirits with long knives. As in the case of the weighing of the soul,
its depiction contains constant hierarchical, ritual elements,
enriched by occasional variations. In the centre of the picture the
solar boat rides on the waves. Amidships stands the Sun-god, Ra, the
dead person kneeling in worship before him. At bow and stern Isis and
Nephthys raise their left arms as if to point the way, while their
right hands hold the crux ansata, the Ankh, symbol of the eternal life
which awaits the voyager. On the far left of the picture, the
Jackal-headed god, Anubis, ‘guide along the roads,’ follows the dead
person as he makes for the boat bearing his own entrails in an urn.

Like the spinal column, the entrails were endowed with a particularly
sacred character. They had a magic power and without it the dead
person could not retain his personality or his consciousness . . . .
Therefore every dead person had to be especially upon the alert in
case they were stolen by one of those evil spirits which swarmed in
the Beyond and were always on the hunt for magic power. (Albert
Champdor, Le livre des morts, p. 52)

At all events they haunted the waterways of the Underworld along which
the boat sailed towards the dead person’s final home in brightness and
light - unless, that is, it was shipwrecked on the way. Sometimes the
sole crew of the boat was a pig. This was the Devourer, waiting to
take the damed to a hell of lamentation, ruled by cruelly taloned
torturers.

Sometimes the boat was towed along the bank by a long rope which took
the shape of ‘a live serpent, symbol of the god who chased the enemies
of light from before the face of Ra’ (Albert Champdor, Le livre des
morts, p. 70). At other times the serpent Apophis, the awesome
incarnation of Set, was to be seen in the water attempting to capsize
the boat. Apophis, dragon-like, breathed fire and raised the waves in
an endeavour to snatch the dead person’s terror-stricken soul. If the
boat withstood these attacks, having avoided rocks, hell-gates and
monsters with gapping jaws, it would sail out into the light of the
rising Sun, before Khepri, the golden Scarab beetle, and the justified
soul would enjoy the bliss of eternal life. Sometimes the scarab would
be standing in the boat bearing the Sun in its pincers like the
promise of immortality. One may imagine how this prodigal wealth of
imagery can lend itself as easily as Greek mythology to
psychoanalysis, premissed upon the underground voyage of the solar
boat being an exploration of the unconscious. At the end of the voyage
the justified soul can sing: ‘The bonds are loosened. I have thrown
down all the evil which was upon me. O mighty Osiris, I am born again!
Behold me, I am born again!’ (quoted by Albert Champdor, Le livre des
morts, p. 156).

Bachelard looks upon the boat which bears the soul to this rebirth as
‘a rediscovery of the cradle’. It suggests similarities with the bosom
and the womb. The ‘first’ boat was perhaps the coffin. ‘If Death were
the first sailor . . . the coffin, according to such a mythological
hypothesis, would not be the last boat. It would be the first boat.
Death would not be the the last voyage. It would be the first voyage.
For some deep dreamers it would be the first true voyage’ (Gaston
Bachelard, L’eau et les reves, essai sur l’imagination de la matiere,
p. 100).

However, Bachelard observes, the boat of the dead arouses the
awareness of sin, just as shipwreck suggests the idea of punishment:
‘Charon’s boat always steers towards Hell. Nobody pilots the boat of
happiness. Thus Charon’s boat has become a symbol which will remain
firmly connected with the immutable misfortune of mankind’ (Gaston
Bachelard, L’eau et les reves, essai sur l’imagination de la matiere,
p. 108).

Ships conjure up ideas of strength and safety in the dangers of a
voyage and the symbolism is as applicable to space-flight as to
sea-travel. The ship is like a star which orbits about its pole, the
Earth, but under human control. It is a picture of life in which the
individual must choose a goal and steer a course.

In Egypt, and subsequently in Rome, there was a ship festival in
honour of Isis which took place in March at the start of Spring. A
freshly built ship, inscribed with holy words and purified by blazing
Torches, with white sails set and laden with perfumes and baskets of
flowers, was launched into the sea and left for the winds to take it.
It was intended to ensure fair winds and calm seas for the rest of the
year. Isis’ ship was a symbol of sacrifice to the gods to ensure the
safety and protection of all other ships and stood for human society,
passengers aboard the same ship of state or fate.
