PB - If you think about it, there is very little incentive for an ortho to consider patterns outside of his realms of interest, in Egyptology, for example. And there is usally considerable incentive for themn to NOT seriously patterns that concern things one or more standard deviations from the orthodox norm.

As with what you said about stereotyping academics, you should not presume to know where I stand on such matters. My general take is that the most informed academics have moved well beyond the 17th century framing that seems to dominate mainstream thought and lower-level academia.
