CK: ...I believe that it was called the "integrated apron" and was the device that collected water at the base..."
I suspect the rectangular shape at the base of the pyramid (Gardiner's O24) probably represents one of the signs above. In essence then O24, imo, is a composite sign of a pyramid shape atop a rectangle shape and depicts the pyramid surrounded by water, the pyramid emerging from water; the pyramid emerging from the Duat.
In the PTs 'Akhet' has a number of meanings and associations. It is associated with the king, Horus, Osiris and Re. It is also the 'womb of Nut'. It seems clear that it is an instrument of rebirth. The AE word mr denotes pyramid but that does not tell us the actual function of the pyramid. The function of the pyramid was 'Akhet' (an instrument of regeneration / reawakening / rebirth) - for the kingdom. When you read many of the PTs and substitute the word 'Ark' or 'Recovery Vault' for the word 'Akhet' and 'deluge' for Duat, they make a lot of sense, especially when you consider that, as the waters of the deluge subsided, part of the pyramid would have been above water while the remainder was still below water - islands or 'mounds' that held within them the 'seed' of life, of reawakening, of rebirth; beacons of light amidst a sea of chaos and darkness.
The PTs also speak of the pathways or passages of the Akhet and also of the two shrines wherein the gods are assembled (the GP's internal passages & chambers?). Two 'shrines' wherein the gods are assembled? Could this be a Grand Gallery filled with statues of the former AE kings (Ka doubles) with another gallery above containing the actual bodies of these ancient AE kings (gods)? (Hall of the Ancestors).
