Hi David and all,

Have been away for a couple of weeks.

Aubrey Burl quoted Alexander Thom on the diameter of the Great circle at Stanton Drew p.78 ' Thom, unsure of the size of the damaged ring, offered a tentative 372ft 3ins (113.5m)

I came up with my diameter by multiplying the diameter of the Rollright stone circle by 3.6 and I used 3.6 as there are 36 stones which make the circumference to Stanton Drew. 103.4 x 3.6 = 372.24 imperial feet compare with Thom 372.25.

I have been using Saxon feet 13.2 inches and so my sum went 94 x 3.6 = 338.4 Saxon/Indus feet for diameter however I believed I had come a cropper when I worked the circumference for Stanton Drew 338.4 x pi = 1063.114954 Saxon ft 1169.426 imperial feet. I have a book written by Herbert Arthur Klein The Science of Measurement, and it provided the answer.

Just as the Rollrights circumference 94 x pi 295.3097 Saxon feet almost exactly same number in a synodic month 29.5306 then at Stanton Drew.

Klein p.129 on the Muslim calendar (the Jewish and Muslim calendar systems are two widely used.) "The 30-year cycle includes 30 x 354, or 10,620, days plus 11 leap days, a total of 10,631 days, or an average of 354.366 7 solar days per Muslim year.

The circumference of Stanton Drew 1063.114 (10631 the same number in a 30 year cycle of the Muslim calendar)r. Having the second largest ring after avebury and the beautiful Rollrights complement each other convinced me this indeed was the intention to record the movements of the moon in stone and measurement.

Briefly the ssw ring 145ft imperial diameter = 131.1818 Saxon feet 132 saxon feet = 145.2 imperial.
And so the Saxon measure is seen clearly 132 x 3.14181818= 414.72 (anyone recognise that number) 12 stones in ring 414.72 / 12 = 34.56.

According to Burl Thom also noticed with his astronomical calculation re the north east circle p79 "looking towards the rings 7ft (2.1m) high stones standing on ground 46ft above the north east circle, observers would have seen the southern moon setting between the pillars blackly silhouetted against the skyline.
