Just for now I'd like to add that a box built into the structure of a pyramid isn't as far fetched as it seems, as that's exactly what we see in the Khafre pyramid G2. In the case of G2 the box is surrounded by masonry on three sides, the front side being partially open. The immediately surrounding masonry forming a 'horseshoe' shape in plan view.

Although there is as far as I know no direct physical evidence, we may consider the idea that the G2 box was originally totally encased with the exception of a front opening leading to a portion of the box sidewall.
