At least he has the scientific acumen to never have actually said this. He did strongly imply it early on or, at the least, propose it as a tentative hypothesis.

I wonder if Egypt wasn't already making moves to lessen the influence of Egyptology on these sites long ago. The progress reflects on all of Egypt and not only Egyptology. Welcome to the 3rd millennia, Dr Hawass.
