I see no reason to exclude the possibility that paint marks were washed off. We still need to explain why some pyramids have no paint marks while others are loaded with inscriptions. Shaun Whitehead's Djedi reported a few painted glyphs on the west wall of the QC's air shaft, but he wasn't allowed to study them further.
Also, I'm not sure there's much of a chance that there's paint residue stuck on those surfaces today when you consider what processes might have been used to "clean" the surfaces during the various "restorations" that have been done inside those monuments over the years. Chemical washing to remove finger grease, sandblasting to expose the virgin surface, also rubble removed and discarded without any analysis of it (at least none have been reported).
There is also some evidence that certain walls may have been lined completely or partially with another material that has since been removed. In G1 the most obvious evidence is the condition of the lower aspect of the AP, the upper walls and ceiling of the Antechamber, the strange formations in the SC, the floor of the QC, the rectangular dark stains at the northern and southern ends of each granite slab in the KC ceiling, the chisel marks along the Long Groove in the GG that indicates that something was hacked out...
How can any of us ever know, when all we can do is think?
