1) Here is the measurement from Google Earth measured from the North Pole to the South Pole.



The ground lenght follows the lay of the land and is the most accurate measure. Map lenght gives the distance going threw air. So 40008 is the map distance. If the air line goes threw an altitude of 10, 20 or 30 meters, it will not give an accurate length since the Earth is curved.

2) I do not understand what you mean. And that side note was not really relevant to the point of my post.

3) The metre was originally defined in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole.
Said in another way, the kilometer was defined as one 10.000 th of the distance from the equator to the North Pole.

The polar circumference of the Earth is 4 times the distance from the equator to the North Pole. So it is accurate to say that the kilometer was defined as one 10,000 th . the distance from the equator to the North Pole and one 40,000 th the distance of the polar circumference of the Earth.
