Racho.. And anyone else interested in solving a problem and not having an argument.

I got into the whole rock cutting thing and like you and speaking from a hell of a lot of experience I'm looking at stuff that can't have been copper tool made.. Period.
Problem is there's so much of it globally when you know what you're looking at.
So went back to basics and Petries drill core which Chris Dunn was so enamoured with.
Apart for the fact that the damn thing has no right to even exist, I read up everything Dunn and others had to say about its parameters. Striations, pitch, feed rate... yadda yadda. All of which I agreed with.
I noticed that its tapered, I don't have the measurments, but its not parallel.
So after several WTF moments I'm getting the impression that it's not rotary drilling. It looks like rotary tube drilling because its round with a circular witness mark at the bottom of the holes.
But it's tapered.
How can that be? how the hell do you rotary drill a tapered hole? producing a plug that's narrow at the top and a hole that's wide at the top. you know that if you slam a tapered shank into a tapered hole it siezes solid.
and anyway the plug tapers in the opposite direction. It's more obvious on the smaller holes meaning that the same process was used for large and small, the taper just represents a smaller percentage of the overall diameter in the big holes, so not so obvious.
so I forced myself to bin the idea of rotary drilling altogether.
So for me... Next in line, Percussion Drilling. I'll talk about that later.
let you have a go.
