I threw the baby out with the bath water a long time ago.
The antiquarians weren't equipped to understand what they were looking at.
All the engineers were busy building railways.
Petrie knew damn well what he was looking at but he couldn't upset the establishment apple cart.
Even today funded scientists and engineers can't say anything without first going through the Egyptological knowledge filter.
