I think the word you're really looking for here is "basic". A hammer is a basic tool but a stone specially selected for a job is primitive. The wheel on a jumbo jet is basic but a log to roll stones on is primitive.
Believing the sun is hot because of the fusion of hydrogen or because of unknown processes is basic but believing the sun is conscious and wants people to be happy in this world and the next is primitive.
You can spin words any way you want but Egyptologists are describing primitive people with primitive beliefs who use primitive means to accoimplish primitive goals. Then they go on to explain only Egyptologists can understand these primitive people despite the fact they can't answer the most primitive questions about the primitive beliefs.
