(Left) Mysterious megalithic temple of Nan Douwas rises above the canals of Nan Madol, Ponape island, Micronesia.

(Right) Ponape has a natural outcropping of prismatic basalt which was employed in the construction of all the major temples on the island.

Prismatic basalt blocks disappearing under water around the main temples of Nan Madol – which seem to be built over some kind of substructure now deep beneath the waves.


At greater depths strange shapes begin to appear.
